Vernacular is local language. It’s a way of talking that resides in a place. We strive to build with materials and techniques that are of the place we live: Cascadia. We strive to build in a way that honors the place we live and the people who live there.

So far, this has meant the pursuit of building materials that:

  • come from maximally localized supply chains

  • are composed of non-toxic substances

  • have low embodied carbon

  • are sourced from responsible land management practices

In real terms this has meant building with:

  • straw bales

  • timber frame

  • round pole

  • natural plasters

  • earthen floors

  • hemp/lime

  • straw/clay
